Charlotte is one of my favorite cities. It has everything but the mountains and the beach and if you are willing to drive a little away, you will find even those quite easily.

As a dad of small children, one of my favorite things about living in Charlotte is the abundance of parks, greenways and activities that are safe and engaging for little ones. Every Saturday, i and my family try an explore a new park or greenway in the area. This has caused us to stumble on some hidden gems that are not just perfect for family hangouts or the kiddies to play but also for photo sessions. As a photographer I am always on the look out for great photoshoot locations in the area and while Charlotte has a host of these, such that you could never run out of options, the areas around Charlotte also boast plentiful options.

Charlotte is surrounded by numerous smaller towns like Dallas (I know right), Matthews, Waxhaw, Cornelius , Clover , Fort Mill. A 30 minutes drive from Uptown Charlotte will have you in one of these towns on light traffic days. While I have not explored all these towns and their offerings, I have certainly come across some beautiful settings for photo sessions. Recently though I stumbled upon this gem and I just had to share photos from my first session there.

Goat Island Park: Now, now…don’t let the name weird you out. Lol. I am yet to meet any goats at this pristine location and I honestly have no idea how it came about this name but this is one of those places that have become a firm favorite for me especially for families and couples. It has two well crafted bridges that afford all kinds of options for posing families and couples. It also features a boardwalk, a field and even a river. For the little ones, there are two playgrounds and adults can get some exercise at the the equipment provided for that purpose. It is also well known to the disc players as it is one of the prime spots for that sport in the area. I have fallen totally in love with this location that we had my own family’s shoot this year here and I plan on holding Christmas mini sessions here as well. Goat Island Park is situated in Cramerton NC which is in Gaston County and is about 15 miles from Uptown Charlotte and an easy 15 minute drive from the airport.

This gorgeous family recently moved to the Charlotte area and reached out via Instagram/Website. I gave them a few options for locations and thankfully they chose Goat Island. It was a beautiful and warm Fall evening with temps as high as 75F in November. It was a pleasant surprise for us all and we were all glad we did not have to deal with a chilly weather situation. This year’s Fall season has been a fun extended one and I think we might even get a week or so more of the beautiful autumn colors. Anyway, I cannot wait to shoot more beautiful people at this gem of a location.

If you are in the Charlotte/Gastonia area and interested in exploring this park for a photo session, please reach out and let’s chat. Would love to make some beautiful memories with you here.
