With the rising inflation and costs of all things weddings, an affordable option for getting hitched is an elopement ceremony. Just like weddings, elopements can differ in style, size, duration and cost.

I have been privileged to cover a couple of elopement ceremonies in the Charlotte area and all have been at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. The ceremonies have been very simple and straightforward some lasting even less than 10 minutes. Most of the couples after the initial ceremony i side the courthouse will spend some time with me getting photos done to memorial their big day before heading to lunch or an early dinner with friends and family. I asked one of the couples for a breakdown of the total cost and I am sharing below

  • Outfits for Bride and Groom – $500 – Suit and simple white dress from Amazon. Couple did not purchase new shoes for the event
  • Rings – $1000
  • Bouquet – $100
  • Courthouse Wedding  License – $60
  • Photography – $250
  • Lunch (group of 8) – $300

An elopement wedding totally erases the cost of the venue and greatly reduces other costs like planning, photography, videography, catering, DJ etc. For a total of about $2500 or less depending on your rings/outfits preference, an elopement wedding might the way to go. As much as I love big ole traditional weddings and I am of course biased because regular wedding photography pay more, I definitely encourage couples who are saving up for that first down payment on  a house or starting to get their finances in order to explore an elopement ceremony. It doesn’t even have to be at a courthouse. I have seen quite a bit of ceremonies on the beach, in the mountains…whatever makes the most sense for you both is the way to go. It is your day and you should totally celebrate it however you want it to be remembered.

For some couples, the reason for choosing a small elopement has nothing to do with cost/pricing and everything to do with celebrating their love with a more intimate ceremony. Maybe you are the type who does not like big crowds or have a smaller group of family and friends or mabe you are an immigrant who just moved to a new country and are eager to start off life with the love of your life, then you should definitely be considering an elopement.

If you are in the Charlotte metro area and seriously giving eloping a thought, feel free to reach out. I would be happy to share my experience photographing couples who have chosen this route with you.
